Develop a Personal Business Personality Janice B Gordon

Develop a PersonalAs an entrepreneur, you have developed a passion, a belief and a purpose which underpins your business; like people, businesses have personalities, it is these characters, ethos and values that will fuel the business and become your Personal Business Personality.

Personality has become important because customers now have to build relationships through a computer interface and they want to know, connect and trust the character behind the interface.  Even in politics we trust the personality and style of the candidate more than the policies and this has become a key element in how we vote.

Personality is crucial in Attracting and Building business relationships.

‘The study of interpersonal attraction is a major area of research in social psychology. The notion of “birds of a feather flock together” points out that similarity is a crucial determinant of interpersonal attraction. Studies about attraction indicate that people are strongly attracted to look-a-likes in physical and social appearance (“like attracts like”). According to the ‘law of attraction’ by Byrne (1971), [13] attraction towards a person is positively related to the proportion of attitudes similarity associated with that person.’

Have you ever travelled and thought ‘I wish that group of people would turn the volume down’; everyone in the group seemed to be shouting? The group cannot hear that their volume may be loud because they are all loud extrovert people and magnetically attracted to one another, the volume level is normal in their world! Like attracts like!

This is what I what for your business, to magnetically attract your customers to you. To do this we need to magnetise your personality. In simple terms; if you are a colourful person, be a colourful business and attract colourful customers.

Why develop a Personal Business Personality, Brand YOU!

Small businesses compete in a crowded market, as the key representative, you are the first presentation of your business that customers, suppliers and stakeholder meet, judge and buy. The best you can do to influence the first presentation is to be the best you can be and magnetise your personality, characters, brand values, style and presentation.

Tom Peters said in Fast Company, “All of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.”

Developing a Personal Business Personality enables your customers:

  • To find the business attractive – even magnetic
  • To distinguish your offers from the other similar offers
  • To identify with the business character and brand values
  • To build a relationship with a tangible character
  • To trust the business to engage them

Your Personal Business Personality will be representative of the thoughts, values, experiences and character of the business entrepreneur, then customers will be able to identify and engage with you and your business.
