Self-determination is life greatest gift! Take full responsibility for your life both as it stands today and in creating your desired tomorrow.
Will Smith said ‘I know who I am, I know what I believe and that is all I need to know’ He was talking about the reassurance of being comfortable with who are and knowing that this is all the resources you need to do and be anything you choose.
I have just had a significant birthday and I love that I have got to the stage of my life that I am happy being me and comfortable knowing my limitations. Knowing who I am makes my limitation; limitless; this gives me grounding to go forward in confidence with certainty.
Unlike when I was in school, I am not willing to blend in, I no longer feel I need to seek permission; unlike when I was building my early career I am not willing to be what others may want me to be or to fit another’s personal perception of me. I just want to be me and what is great every day I discover more of what that is.
Knowing who I am and what I believe gives me the freedom to change and re-evaluating my position without changing who I am.
This theory of self-determination was initially developed by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan professors in the Department of Clinical and Social Sciences in Psychology at theUniversity of Rochester. “To be self-determined is to endorse one’s actions at the highest level of reflection. When self-determined, people experience a sense of freedom to do what is interesting, personally important and vitalising.”
The beauty of knowing who I am and that I have the ability to choose or be self-determined, gives me with a huge sense of responsibility, if I am to choose my friends, I must choose well; if I am to achieve, I must achieve something worthy; if I am to be, I must be somebody. Tony Robbins said “If you can’t, you must. If you must, you can.”
Completing another year gives me space to reflect on who I am and who I want to be. I look back with gratitude for my friends, my family and my experience and look forward with excitement for the possibilities and enthusiasm for what will be.
I have written an eBook that talk about the importance of knowing who you are to be able to ‘Stand out from the Crowd’.
I would love to hear your comments: Who are you and who do you want to be?
