To thrive in life you need 3 bones a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone. To thrive in life is also to thrive in business.Arianna Huffington tells her story of when she was physically and mentally exhausted she was not able to thrive in her business. Her book Thrive re-evaluates how work and success fits within the context of our whole lives, stating “We cannot thrive and lead the lives we want (as opposed to the lives we’ve settled for) without learning to go inward.”Richard Branson is an entrepreneur I admire and her certainly who knows how to thrive in life and business using the 3 bones to success:1. Your wishbone is your dream; it is your purpose and your passion. I believe you must take your big audacious dream and create a specific vision; however, a vision is little more than an empty dream unless it is shared. Richard Branson said “I sometimes think in life you’ve got to dream big by setting yourself seemingly impossible challenges. You then have to catch up with them. You can make what people believe is impossible possible if you set big enough targets.”2. Your backbone is a combination of your core strength and determination; unless your effort is focused your goals will be difficult to achieve. Richard Branson said “It’s important to understand what your main motivation is so that you can focus your efforts on reaching those goals. Then structure your job – perhaps by delegating some work – so that you can spend as much time as possible turning this energy to your company’s advantage.”
3. Your funny bone is your unique view of the world, your personality. My view of the world is, ‘life is too serious to be taken too seriously’. Dwight D. Eisenhower the 34th President of the United States said “A sense of humour is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done”. Richard Branson the master of using his personality and sense of humour to lead his employees and motivate his customers, said of “Humour, I think is a very important part of building a business, not taking yourself too seriously and being willing to have a sense of humour”.
The ethos of my book Business Evolution is how these 3 bones come together in (your personality) who you are and what you stand for, which is linked to what you do and how you do it (your business).
