Baroness Mone is one of the UK’s most successful female entrepreneurs and founder of international lingerie brand, Ultimo. The award-winning ‘Bra Queen’ built her success on her spirit of determination, self-belief and hard work. Michelle Mone was recognition of her services to UK business and receiving an OBE from The Queen in 2010. Michelle Mone OBE sold 80% of Ultimo and bought 100% of UTan & Beauty in 2014.
Her ground roots spirit was evident when Micelle spoke at the Evening Standard Business Connections event last week. Michelle said she was using this new chapter in her life to developing new opportunities and mentor others on their business journey. Here are five of many insightful lessons Michelle shared with her audience:
- Have a Big Dream
Michelle said, “Think big, so big things happen”
Michelle as always had a desire to become an entrepreneur. If you have a dream, make it big and never giving up.
- You are in Charge of your Life
Michelle said, “If you have a fire in your belly and a can-do attitude you will make it”
Michelle early life was in Glasgow’s East End, her parents told her it did not matter where you come from, the colour of your skin, your education or if you have money or not. Success is all about your motivation to become the person you want to be, and nothing else.
- Failing to plan is Planning to Fail.
Michelle said, “If you are organised than everything around you is organise as well”.
To succeed in business, you have to have a business plan and keep on top of many activities to work your plan. Michelle writes her to do list the night before and puts alarms on her phone to remind her of all her and her teams’ activities. Michelle wakes up every morning after four hours sleep ‘fearing failure’ but she said, this is what drives her on every single day.
- Create your own Opportunities
Michelle said, “Do not wait for other people to come to you because this is somethings that will never happen.”
You have to look for and create your opportunities. Michelle discovered a new silicone product and approached the company to secure the European licence to help produce her bras.
- Believe in Yourself
Michelle said, “You have to believe in yourself if you do not, do not start a business.”
Michelle thought she could produce a more comfortable and better-looking bra that upgraded more cleavage.
It is always a privilege to hear first-hand a truly remarkable story that inspires and challenges that is full of inspiration and wisdom. I loved the way Michelle Mone OBE weaved her life story into life lessons and business insights.
